Living on Campus
Philosophy & Community Standards
Residential Living Philosophy
Living in a residence hall is an important element of the Gardner-Webb experience. A residence hall is a place where students can achieve academic goals and successes as well as endeavor to find spiritual renewal and growth. GWU is an institution that sets high academic standards and expects students to invest in their overall education. In addition, we are an institution that places great emphasis on spiritual development. The values of Christian Higher Education are at the core of our mission and goal. We truly believe that students learn from the environment in which they live. Therefore, we aim to make our halls a place where students experience a variety of different people and learn more about who they are and the "life skills" that will provide a foundation for a successful future. Ultimately, our residence halls are a place where each student can be comfortable, relaxed, restful and peaceful. A place where each student can call home.
Community Standards at The Webb
The Office of Residence Life has designed programs and events that promote a community atmosphere on campus. Each individual residence hall staff and their students host special recreational, social, cultural and educational programs to improve the quality of living and to enhance the community in which they live. These activities may include field trips, coffee houses, parties, movie nights, theatrical and musical performances, workshops, guest speakers or sporting events. We encourage each student to take advantage of these opportunities. Your participation and leadership will help create an environment where friendships flourish, new experiences are enjoyed and people feel at home.
In keeping with the mission and purpose of the university, the Residence Life staff has outlined certain standards for student conduct that serve to enhance the residence hall community.
One of those standards that GWU prides itself in is the ability to offer to the students a substance- free environment within each residence hall. There are designated smoke and tobacco use areas located outside each hall. Alcohol is prohibited from the Gardner-Webb campus.
The GWU visitation program allows guest of the opposite gender to visit a student's room during the designated visitation hours. Each member of the opposite gender is to be escorted at all times while visiting in the residence halls and should sign-in and sign-out on the appropriate forms located in each hall. In keeping with the safety and security standards of the University, students participating in visitation should keep their door open at all times when a guest of the opposite gender is present. We encourage family to visit the hall and request that the resident inform his/her residence life staff when family arrives during non-visitation hours. Siblings must be accompanied by a parent when visiting during non-visitation hours.
Each residence hall is equipped with a lobby area where students can meet for games, fellowship, movies, or to just hang out. Persons of the opposite gender may visit in the lobbies and/or lounge areas during established lobby visitation hours which are posted in the residence halls.
With the overall atmosphere conducive to study and rest, the Residence Life Office has established designated Quiet Hours to provide a study time for students to pursue their individual goals. During these hours, the students are encouraged to provide an atmosphere in which others may study and sleep. At all times, courtesy hours are in effect, which means all students are expected to be considerate of their community.
